Not at all! Spark is designed as a first choir experience. Singers arrive with all kinds of musical backgrounds, and our Elementary Music Specialists help every child learn how to use their voice, make music with others, and feel successful along the way.

Spark rehearsals are active, playful, and designed specifically for young singers. Children learn through singing, movement, musical games, creative activities, and plenty of opportunities to make music together. They're building real musical skills—but at this age, we believe learning should feel a lot like playing.

Probably! Singers don't need to read music, have private lessons, or already know how to “sing correctly.” If your child enjoys music and is ready to participate in a group activity, Spark is designed to help them take that first step.

Singers may miss up to two rehearsals per concert cycle. Spark performs in SLYC's annual holiday concert, Tidings of Joy, and our spring concert, with additional optional community performance opportunities offered throughout the season.

As singers grow, they can continue their SLYC journey in Ignite, our training choir for grades 3–4. Ignite builds on the musical foundation established in Spark while giving singers greater independence and new opportunities to grow.
